Each of these units was used for the assembly of some sort of equipment like a telephone. There are 4 positions on a big circular rotating platform that index from a load position to an assembly position to a hold position to an unload position (order might be reversed). In the assembly position, there is an X-Y robot unit that positions a gripper and screw driver over the unit being put together.
In the image above, the load/unload positions on the circular platform are toward the lower right, under the banner safety light curtain. The x-y robot driver-gripper is behind the shield on the left. The image below is looking from the backside.
The image above shows one of the x-y robot tool assemblies. The loose plastic tubes look like they might have been some sort of parts feeders.
The image below shows the screw driver (vertical gold tube to the upper right) with the drive shaft below it going to the gripper assembly below.
The motors driving the x & y axis are stepper motors with encoders.

The image above shows the top surface of the rotating platform. The 4 stations can be seem mounted to it. Note that they do not look exactly alike.

Note that each unit has overhead swinging arms from which other manual tools or whatever can be suspended.
Note the Banner light curtain sending/receiving units. There are double mirrors on each unit that get the beams from the sender, around corners, and to the receiver.

Note the double finger proximity switches in the image above.
Note the terminal & keyboard swing-arm below.
The image above shows the screw driver motor (gold, black and silver cylinder to the right).
The image below shows the gripper below it, positioned above one of the work holders-note the optical sensors.
The image below is looking up at the end of the grippers.
